Devil's Punchbowl (Siskiyou Wilderness)

Rating (Out of 5): 4.5

Location: Between Grants Pass, Ore. and Crescent City, Calif.

Distance: 10 miles round-trip

Difficulty: Hard

Camping: Yes

Quick hit: This sometimes tough trail leads to one of the most spectacular lakes in the Siskiyou Mountains. The trail begins at Doe Flat Trailhead. the hike from difficult to moderately strenuous, but it's still the premier destination in the Siskiyou Wilderness.
The trail takes you past beautiful, clear streams and through an old-growth forest of Douglas-fir, white fir and Brewer spruce.
The final mile enters an alpine valley of silver-gray stone polished almost bare by glaciers. The trail wraps around a smaller lake before finally reaching Devil's Punchbowl.
Because the environment here is so sensitive and gets so much use, people are advised to be careful if they decide to camp and not to have a campfire.

Directions: From Grants Pass, Ore. drive Redwood Highway 199 south past the Siskiyou Summit tunnel for 53 miles. Once you pass the tunnel, turn left on Little Jones Creek Road. Stay on paved road 10 miles. Turn left at gravel Road 16N02 and follow it for 4.2 miles to trailhead.
