Quick hit: Kelly Lake is the easiest lake of the Siskiyou Wilderness to reach, because people can drive almost all the way there. After parking at the trailhead, the lake is a mere .3 miles down a wide trail, and people regularly carry their coolers, fishing gear and picnic baskets to the lake. Kelly Lake doesn’t have amazing scenery, but it’s a nice little place to fish and hang out with small children. There’s a nice trail beyond the right side of the lake that takes you to Poker Flat.
Directions: From Grants Pass, follow Redwood Highway 199 past Cave Junction to O’Brien. Turn left on Waldo Road and continue five miles to a junction with Takelma Road. Continue straight, following pointers for Bolan Lake, and keep going to toward Happy Camp, Calif. Just after you cross the Oregon/California border, turn right at Forest Service Road 18N27, which has pointers for Kelly Lake and Poker Flat Trailhead. Follow 18N27 and pass markers for Kelly Lake until you reach the trailhead.
