River Trail (Castle Crags State Park)

Location: 14 miles South of Mount Shasta, Calif.

Distance: 3 miles round-trip

Difficulty: Easy

Camping: At Castle Crags campground

Quick hit: This gentle hike, which begins at Riverside picnic area is a must for river enthusiasts. The trail closely follows the Upper Sacramento River and crosses two year-round creeks. The hike offers a chance to cross the river on a suspension bridge and spring wildflowers and autumn colors are outstanding. Campers may access this trail from near site #13.

Directions: From Grants Pass, follow Interstate 5 south for 128 miles into California. About 14 miles south of Mount Shasta, take exit 724 toward the town of Castella. Follow pointers to Castle Crags State Park .4 miles to park entrance.
