Root Creek Trail (Castle Crags State Park)

Location: 14 miles South of Mount Shasta, Calif.

Difficulty: Easy

Camping: At Castle Crags campground

Quick hit: This gentle 1 mile hike that begins at Vista Point is a peaceful walk through the woods and offers a reward at the end: tumbling, beautiful Root Creek. The entire trail is shaded and offers opportunities to view some of the park’s many varieties of orchids during spring and early summer.

Directions: From Grants Pass, follow Interstate 5 south for 128 miles into California. About 14 miles south of Mount Shasta, take exit 724 toward the town of Castella. Follow pointers .4 miles to park entrance.
