Quick hit: Some of the largest and most magnificent Redwood trees can be seen on this short, easy little loop hike off the famous Howland Hill Road in the heart of Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. The tallest trees are equal in height to a 35 story skyscraper and 16 feet in diameter.
Directions: From Grants Pass, follow Redwood Highway 199 for 70 miles south into California. Take a left on South Fork Road (427) and cross a bridge over the Smith River. Follow South Fork Road for 1.5 miles and take a right onto Douglas Park Road, following pointers to Stout Grove. Continue on Douglas Park road until it becomes Howland Hill Road, a rough, dirt road that runs into Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Turn right at a pointer for Stout Grove and park in the parking lot.
