Some coho and summer steelhead still working up Rogue River (Fishing report)Another week of frigid weather has left the local bite on the Rogue River idling in neutral.Some coho and summer steelhead are still making their way through the Grants Pass area, but few winter fish have made their way upriver.Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle recommends running plugs or side-drifting roe or yarn balls if fishing from a boat."There's fish down at the coast," Whitaker said. "We need a little more high water action to get them to come up this way."Bank anglers can throw spoons or spinners while drifting small pieces of roe at Whitehorse Park or near Robertson Bridge.Anxious anglers can purchase their 2018 fishing licenses at sporting goods stores or other retail locations.The Applegate River opens to steelhead angling on Jan. 1.APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. Applegate Reservoir has been stocked with rainbow trout and fishing should be good.The reservoir is down to the flood control pool so the only boat access is the low water ramp at French Gulch.Slow trolling a Wedding ring and worm combination, flashers or dodgers with bait, or wind-drifting worms should be effective.Trolling a lure like a flatfish or casting flies may work as well. Bank fishing can be difficult at Applegate due to the steep shoreline, but the upper end should have some access. The surface temperature in the reservoir is 41 degrees.DIAMOND LAKE. Fishing may be difficult considering the winter storm warnings.The good news is that ice fishing may be around the corner.Diamond Lake has been stocked with tiger trout. These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub. Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught.Anglers can check fishing and water conditions at Diamond Lake on the Diamond Lake Resort website, or call their toll free number at 1-800-733-7593, ext. 5 for updates. Diamond Lake is open year-round.EXPO POND. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will stock the pond just north of the Isola Arena with 1,000 legal-size and 150 larger-size rainbow trout before Christmas.Anglers can fish the pond, which is now within a RV Park developed by Jackson County, by parking in the lot to the right as you drive in Gate 5 before walking to the pond.A day use fee to park there is $4. An annual parking permit can be purchased from the Jackson County Parks Department for $30.LAKE SELMAC. Lake Selmac has been recently stocked with legal-size rainbow trout, large rainbows and fingerlings.Boat anglers are reminded to clean weeds off boats before leaving the lake.
