Coho salmon, summer steelhead still biting along the Rogue River (Fishing report)Fishing conditions on the Rogue River have held steady for the past week.Coho salmon are still biting on jigs or brightly-colored spinners. Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle recommends trying areas near Robertson Bridge and Griffin Park for those fish.Summer steelhead are still around as well. Whitaker suggests side-drifting small pieces of roe or a nightcrawler.Spoons and spinners work well for steelhead, which are being caught at Schroeder Park as well as the two locations mentioned above.Water temperatures on the Rogue River measured at the Grants Pass water treatment facility have fallen to below 42 degrees in recent days.The discharge rate has dropped to below 2,200 cubic feet per second as of Thursday evening.APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. Applegate Reservoir is freshly stocked with rainbow trout and fishing should be very good.The reservoir is down to the flood control pool, so the only boat access is the low water ramp at French Gulch. Slow trolling a Wedding Ring and worm combination, flashers or dodgers with bait, or wind-drifting worms should be effective. Trolling a lure like a flatfish or casting flies may work as well. Bank fishing can be difficult at Applegate due to the steep shoreline, but the upper end should have some access. The surface temperature in the reservoir is about 45 degrees.FISH LAKE. Fish Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, tiger trout and chinook salmon. Brook trout also are available.The lake is currently free of ice, but that could change quickly, and is 67 percent full. Anglers should be aware that a snow park permit is needed to use the USFS lot at the boat ramp in winter. The resort will be open Friday-Sunday during the winter.ILLINOIS RIVER. Summer steelhead and half-pounders are present in the lower river. Only hatchery fish may be retained.LAKE SELMAC. Lake Selmac is freshly stocked with legal-size rainbow trout, large rainbows and fingerlings.Road closures are still in effect due to work on the spillway for the dam, but a detour reportedly remains available to the Mallard Loop area of the lake.Boat anglers are reminded to clean weeds off boats before leaving the lake.LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. Lost Creek Reservoir is a winter trout fishing hot spot in the Rogue Valley, with the vast majority of water users being anglers this time of year.Many more large trout are being stocked in Lost Creek than in past years as a result of data from recent trout tagging studies.Boat anglers in winter can have success trolling along the dam, around the exposed island near the Takelma boat ramp, and shallower areas of the main reservoir.Bank anglers have good success on either side of the dam, but are reminded to not block access to the Takelma boat ramp.Both the Takelma boat ramp and Marina boat ramps are available.
