Cooler water slows coho, summer steelhead bites (Fishing report)A sharp drop in water temperature has greatly slowed the coho and summer steelhead bites on the Rogue River.Some fish are still biting despite the temperature measured near the water treatment facility in Grants Pass having fallen to about 45 degrees as of Thursday.Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle recommends using spoons or spinners from the bank to attract coho and nightcrawlers or side-drifting roe for steelhead.Winter steelhead are beginning to find their way up the lower portion of the Rogue. Whitaker expects that, given current flow conditions, those fish will begin making local appearances by Christmas.Word has gotten around about fishing at the Applegate Reservoir being strong when trolling Wicked Lures.A reported bass die-off at Lake Selmac has not affected trout fishing there.Expo Pond at the Jackson County Fairgrounds and Reinhart Pond in Grants Pass were both recently stocked with trout.Winter steelhead typically begin arriving in the upper Illinois River by now. Anglers can also hit the Applegate River, which is closed to steelhead angling until Jan. 1, but open to trout fishing.FISH LAKE. Fish Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, tiger trout and chinook salmon. Brook trout also are available.Some rainbow trout and chinook were caught on flies recently but the water temperature was a cold 43 degrees. Anglers should be aware that a snow park permit is needed to use the USFS lot at the boat ramp in winter. LAKE SELMAC. Lake Selmac is freshly stocked with legal-size rainbow trout, large rainbows and fingerlings.Road closures are still in effect due to work on the spillway for the dam. The west side of the lake is accessible by the normal route, while the east end requires a trip down Deer Creek Road and Parker Road before returning to Lakeshore Drive.LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. Lost Creek Reservoir is a winter trout fishing hot spot in the Rogue Valley, with the vast majority of water users being anglers this time of year.Many more large trout are being stocked in Lost Creek than in past years as a result of data from recent trout tagging studies.Boat anglers in winter can have success trolling along the dam, around the exposed island near the Takelma boat ramp, and shallower areas of the main reservoir. Bank anglers have good success on either side of the dam, but are reminded to not block access to the Takelma boat ramp.Both the Takelma boat ramp and Marina boat ramps are available.
