10/20/2017 - Fishing Report

Action should pick up on the Rogue soon (Fishing report)

Local fishing on the Rogue River has been hit or miss in recent days.

The chinook bite has died down and coho have yet to make it farther up river than the Hog Creek area.

Rain forecast for the weekend will push water levels up a bit, potentially nudging fish closer, but things should pick up sooner rather than later.

"We're allowed to fish for the coho here in Grants Pass," local fishing guide Troy Whitaker said. "People just have to make sure they're fin-clipped."

Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle, recommends using spoons and spinners to attract the few salmon in the area.

The steelhead bite remains a stronger option locally. Those fish are biting on imitation salmon eggs, nightcrawlers and back-trolled plugs.

Anglers interested in a quicker trip out on the water should visit the Lost Creek Reservoir, which was recently stocked with more than 1,000 rainbow trout anywhere from 14 to 20 inches in length.

Whitaker recommends using PowerBait or trolling Wedding rings to attract those fish.

Reinhart Pond in Grants Pass and Expo Pond in Medford are expected to receive a smaller shipment of trout within the next week.

APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. The reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout. Early or late in the day will be best for all fishing at the reservoir. There is very low fishing pressure up here, but trout fishing should be good.

The reservoir is quickly dropping down to the flood control pool. At current water levels the only boat access should be the low-water ramp at French Gulch, but mud can be a problem in early fall at this location. Hart-tish is closed for the winter.

DIAMOND LAKE. Trout fishing is still very productive and a significant portion of fish caught have been larger than 12 inches in length.

Trolling lures and bottom fishing with PowerBait across all depths continue to be productive fishing methods. Fly anglers are having good luck on the south end of the lake as well.

As part of the 2016 regulation simplification process, Diamond Lake is now back to the Southwest Zone regulation of 5 rainbow trout per day.

ILLINOIS RIVER. The river is open for trout fishing. Since only hatchery trout may be retained, and hatchery trout are not likely to be to be found in the Illinois River at this time of year, fishing will be primarily catch-and-release of the native cutthroat trout.

LAKE SELMAC. Lake Selmac is scheduled to receive 200 larger (14- to 16-inch) rainbow trout this week. However weeds still remain an issue for anglers.

Remember that it is easy to cast too far for bass and panfish at Selmac. Many of these fish can be caught (and even seen) fairly close in.

Road construction around the dam on Lakeshore Drive is currently requiring a detour to access the east side of the lake off of Deer Creek Drive.
