It's time for anglers to start targeting chinook salmon on the Rogue (Fishing reports)

As chinook begin to slow down more often on stretches of the Rogue River going through Grants Pass, next week may be the time to start targeting the salmon.

The best bite is still up at Shady Cove for the time being, local fishing guide Troy Whitaker said, but people should start targeting them in town as soon as next week.

Sardine-wrapped Kwikfish or back-bouncing roe are the baits of choice for the chinook. Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle, recommends putting the roe in a spawn sack to help it last longer in the water.

Summer steelhead are still working their way through Grants Pass and are mostly being caught on plugs.

The most effective color combinations for plugs include silvers with a back black and red dot and copper-colored.

Steelhead are also biting on copper spinners. Whitaker recommends using Blue Fox spinners.

"Whitehorse Park is a nice spot to be fishing from right now," Whitaker said. "The Robertson Bridge area and Chinook Park are good as well."

Trout fishing is strong at the Applegate Reservoir. Bank anglers should cast from the far side of the reservoir away from the dam while trollers should set up closer to it.

Wedding rings or Wiggle Hoochies behind a flasher tipped with a nightcrawler are good baits for trout.

DIAMOND LAKE. Trout fishing has been excellent. A significant portion of fish caught have been larger than 12 inches.

Diamond Lake has been stocked with tiger trout. These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub. Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught.

Anglers that are planning on taking a trip to Diamond Lake should check with the Umpqua National Forest (541-498-2531) for information on seasonal camp and ramp closures. Anglers can check fishing and water conditions at Diamond Lake on the Diamond Lake Resort website, or call their toll free number at 1-800-733-7593, ext. 5 for updates.

LAKE SELMAC. Fishing for rainbow trout has been fair, and the bluegill bite is very good.

Remember that it is easy to cast too far for bass and panfish at Selmac. Many of these fish can be caught (and even seen) fairly close in.

With the warm, sunny weather, fishing will be best early and late in the day.

LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. Lost Creek Reservoir was stocked with 10,000 legal-sized and 1,500 1-pound rainbow trout last week.

Fishing has been good for anglers trolling bait and lures. Bank anglers have been catching fish near the Takelma Ramp, marina, and spillway using spinners or a nightcrawler below a bobber.

Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good. The reservoir is 91 percent full.

REINHART POND. The pond has been stocked with legal- and trophy-size rainbow trout. Some of these fish should still be available.

Fishing for warm-water species should be good, especially early and late in the day.
