Spring chinook bite finally picking up (Fishing report)

The spring chinook bite in Grants Pass has finally picked up a bit.

Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle said he's received good reports from anglers casting out near Tom Pearce Park. Sardine-wrapped Kiwkfish continues to be the most successful bait used for chinook.

Should the local springer bite continue to strengthen, it would coincide with an expansion of the river area where the wild salmon can be harvested.

Anglers can currently keep wild chinook caught up to the Fishers Ferry boat ramp near Gold Hill. Beginning July 1, the boundary moves to Dodge Bridge.

Whitaker said Shady Cove remains the best salmon spot.

Summer steelhead continue to wind their way through town. Conditions on the Rogue River remain good — the discharge rate has been below 4,000 cubic feet per second since Tuesday.

Smaller plugs are attracting the steelhead. Whitaker recommends using silver plugs with a black back and a red dot. Other strong options include crawdad-colored plugs or those of a copper hue.

Steelhead tend to congregate in areas of water 4 to 6 feet deep. Tailouts behind boulders should prove fruitful.

Elsewhere, the bass bite at Lake Selmac is humming along. Weeds are beginning to become an issue but are still very manageable.

Topwater frog lures work well in the early morning at Selmac. Plastic creatures and Senko baits are best suited for later on.

APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. The reservoir is well stocked with legal-size and 1-pound rainbow trout, which should make for very good trout fishing.

Trolling with a Wedding Ring and bait combination has been effective, as has still fishing with bait from the shore. Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good.

Hart-Tish Park and boat ramp are open. The Copper Boat Ramp is also open.

APPLEGATE RIVER. The river is now open for trout fishing. Two hatchery trout may be harvested per day. Wild trout must be released unharmed.

DIAMOND LAKE. Trout fishing has been excellent. A significant portion of fish caught have been larger than 12 inches.

Diamond Lake was stocked with tiger trout. These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub. Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught.

Diamond Lake is on the Southwest Zone regulation of five rainbow trout per day.

LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. The reservoir has been stocked with legal-sized and 1-pound rainbow trout.

Fishing has been good for anglers trolling bait and lures. Bank anglers have been catching fish near the Takelma Ramp, marina, and spillway using spinners or a nightcrawler below a bobber.

Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good. The reservoir is full.
