05/12/2017 - Fishing Report

It's a great time for anglers to get out on the Rogue (Fishing reports)

Fishing conditions remain strong across the Rogue Valley. The water on the Rogue River has dropped from above 8,500 cubic feet per second to below 5,500 which should provide better opportunities to catch spring chinook.

Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle recommends using sardine-wrapped Kwikfish or using sand shrimp on the Rogue.

Area lakes and reservoirs are producing trout at a high clip. Lake Selmac also has a strong bass bite early in the morning and late in the evening.

Whitaker suggests using top-water baits for bass, and nightcrawlers suspended under a bobber for trout.

Trout fishing resumes on the Applegate River and the Illinois River on May 22.

• APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. Applegate Reservoir has been stocked with legal-size and 2-pound rainbow trout. Trolling with a Wedding ring has been effective, as has fishing with bait from the shore. Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good. Hart-Tish Park and boat ramp are now open. The Copper Boat Ramp is also open.

• EXPO POND. Anglers can once again fish the pond just to the north of the arena, which is now within a RV Park developed by Jackson County. Fishing has been good for stocked rainbow trout. Parking is available to the right as you drive in Gate 5. A day-use fee to park here is $4. An annual parking permit can be purchased from the Jackson County Parks Department for $30.

• HYATT LAKE. Fishing is fair for rainbow trout. Fishing with bait is productive. Fish are being caught on flies and lures as well.

The reservoir is 65 percent full. The Mountain View boat ramp is open. Some camping sites are available; however, the campgrounds facilities are still closed for the season.

• LAKE SELMAC. Selmac has been stocked with legal-size rainbow trout. Trout fishing has been good, however, be advised there are a lot of aquatic weeds.

Fishing for bass and other warmwater species has been good. Look for fish to be around structures along the shore.

• REINHART POND. Reinhart Pond was stocked last week with legal-size and trophy-sized rainbow trout. Fishing for them has been good.
