Fishing Report: Rogue River finally coming into shape

The Rogue River has started to fall back toward optimum levels after a major spike in the water levels Saturday.

The river climbed to nearly 8,000 cubic feet per second Saturday, but receded to 4,030 cfs as of this morning, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey.

Anglers have used the slightly-higher-than-normal levels during the past few days to run plugs behind a side planer, said Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle.

"The water levels have been up," Whitaker said. "It looks like its finally coming into shape. We got a little more water from the weekend than I expected. It blew it out big time. Down at Rand, there were a lot of fish caught (Thursday)."

Those fishing on the middle part of the Rogue received an extra bit of good news. Wild steelhead can now be kept up the river from Hog Creek. Anglers can keep one wild steelhead a day and up to five per year.

Whitaker said those looking to side drift the Rogue should look for extended areas to float like Schroeder Park to Robertson Bridge or Schroeder Park to Griffin Park.

Darker-colored plugs, including blacks and reds, or yarn balls should work best. Small pieces of roe with dark puff balls also could prove effective.

Whitaker said the Illinois River is in good shape, and a prime spot to fish is near the swinging bridge.

Along the Applegate River, Whitaker said Little Cleos and bobbers and jigs are still the best options for anglers, while hot spots include Cantrall-Buckley County Park and Turtle Lane.

• Chetco River. According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the steelhead have been hitting at a fair to good rate.

For boaters, side drifting small clusters of eggs or yarn balls seems to produce, while bank anglers have found success plunking spin-and-glows or drifting eggs.

Bank access is excellent, according to the ODFW.

Popular spots include Social Security Bar, Alfred A. Loeb State Park and the Ice Box.
