WHITEHORSE PARK (Grants Pass area)
General Description: Located about eight miles west of Grants Pass along Lower River Road, Whitehorse Park features 34 campsites, eight full hook-ups and one yurt that sleeps five. There’s a shower and restroom. The park is located near the mouth of where the Applegate River drains into the Rogue River.
Fish: Fall chinook (August, September); winter steelhead (February, March, April)
How to land'em: For those fishing for fall chinook, your best bet will to fish from a boat through an area below Whitehorse Park called 50 Rocks. The area is characterized by long flat water at the bottom of a riffle. The salmon tend to hold in the drop-off into deep water within the long flat stretch. The best method for catching the fall chinook is to back-bounce roe or running KwikFish. Most anglers slowly work up-and-down through the slow deep water. For winter steelhead, anglers can fish from the parking lot, down along a sandy beach and out to Pass Creek. Anglers fishing from a boat can find success pulling plugs while those from the bank tend to score with spoons and by side-drifting roe.
Directions: From Grants Pass, follow Upper River Road and then Lower River Road for about 7.7 miles to Whitehorse Park. There are signs that lead the way. Click here for a map via Google Maps.
