ARGO PARK (Merlin/Galice area)

General Description: This access point within the canyon area of lower middle Rogue River has a parking spot and bank access. Reaching this area via drift boat is difficult because the rapids above Argo can be dangerous. The ramp at Argo is unimproved but has restrooms. Click here for a map of the Rogue River and guide to area parks, as well as information on kayaking.

Fish: Summer steelhead (July, August, September, October); winter steelhead (December, January, February, March, April)

How to land'em: The bar at Argo provides bank access right at the parking and launching area, as well as both up and downstream with a little walking. The area is best for summer and winter steelhead, and anglers as a general rule should focus on the edges of the fast water across the river. This area lends itself best to drift fishing yarn balls, Lil corkies, nightcrawlers and clusters of cured roe. Upstream from the parking area a short way is a rock ledge near which both summer and winter steelhead like to hold. Using the methods described above can be quite productive at times. Downstream from the parking area there is water more suitable for fishing spinners and the spoons. The standard fare of Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, Vibrax spinners and Lil Cleo's, Steelees and other spoons fish well to the shallower flat down stream a short ways. Fly-anglers will find best success dead-drifting a stone fly with a nymph dropper in this area.
