WILDFIRE REPORTED IN WILD ROGUE AREA A wildfire was spotted Tuesday evening in the Kelsey Creek drainage along the Josephine-Curry county border about 30 miles northwest of Grants Pass.Brian Ballou of the Oregon Department of Forestry said it was likely caused by lightning two weeks ago and finally started putting up smoke. It was estimated at just 3 acres this morning, and Ballou said he didn't expect it to take off."We're trying to drown it right now," Ballou said.A helicopter dumped water on it last night and again this morning, according to Ballou. ODF sent a bulldozer out to possibly scrape out better road access, and set up temporary dip tanks, he added. The six-person Siskiyou Rappellers were also dropped in by helicopter to fight the fire, which is about 2 miles from the Rogue River on a steep ridge, about 10 miles upstream of Marial. The area is steep, heavily forested and with few roads, part of the so-called Zane Grey roadless area on Bureau of Land Management land. The fire is also in the vicinity of lands proposed for wilderness.o o oPast blogsBEND TEENAGER DROWNS IN RAFTING ACCIDENT ON NORTH UMPQUA RIVERTHE ART OF ‘NINJA FISHING’ AT MILLER LAKEFISHING REPORT: GOLD HILL TO ROGUE RIVER THE BEST STRETCH FOR SALMON, STEELHEADMAN ARRESTED FOR LAYING TRAPS FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERSOPEN LETTER TO A MOUNTAIN BIKE THIEF (AND FIVE GREAT PLACES TO RIDE) |
