Heavy rain could muddy up coho fishing next week (Fishing report)Extended periods of rain can lead to uncertain fishing conditions on the Rogue River.Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle expects a strong period of angling for coho to continue through Saturday before strong bands of precipitation forecasted for Sunday and Monday potentially muddy things up."The good thing about the rain bringing water levels up is that it'll push some of the leaves and debris out, which will make plug fishing easier," Whitaker said. "We've been seeing a lot of coho out there."Whitaker recommends anglers in search of coho check out Whitehorse Park, Schroeder Park and the Robertson Bridge area. The fish have been hanging out in calmer waters away from strong currents, so he recommends tossing spoons or spinners rubbed with a favorite scent such as shrimp or squid.Away from the Rogue, Whitaker has heard good things about the bass bite at Lake Selmac. The water there is starting to cool and the fish are beginning to fatten up the winter cold, meaning they'll bite on just about anything that looks appetizing."Wedding Rings and Wicked Lures are always fish-catchers up there," Whitaker said. "Pull either behind a flasher."APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. The reservoir is freshly stocked with rainbow trout and fishing should be very good. There is very low fishing pressure up here, but recent reports indicate that trout fishing has been good for anglers trolling with Wedding Ring and flasher combinations. The reservoir is basically down to the flood control pool. At current water levels, the only boat access should be the low water ramp at French Gulch, but mud can be a problem in early fall at this location.DIAMOND LAKE. Trout fishing has slowed after an excellent summer and early fall. Fishing can still be productive under the right conditions, but angler need to be alert for light bites.Diamond Lake has been stocked with tiger trout. These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub.Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught.LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. The reservoir is a winter trout fishing hot spot in the Rogue Valley, with the vast majority of water users being anglers this time of year. The reservoir has received 5,000 legal-size and 3,300 14- to 16-inch trout in October, and fishing should be very good. Many more large trout are being stocked in Lost Creek than in past years as a result of data from recent trout tagging studies.Boat anglers in winter can have success trolling along the dam, around the exposed island near the Takelma boat ramp, and shallower areas of the main reservoir. Bank anglers have good success on either side of the dam, but are reminded to not block access to the Takelma boat ramp. The reservoir surface temperature has cooled dramatically. All boat ramps are still open.
