Summer steelhead still being caught on the Rogue (Fishing report)

The Rogue River, while not red hot, is still producing nice catches of summer steelhead the length of the river.

"It's been up and down," said Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle. "They're out there catching steelhead and coho right now."

Anglers can still fool steelhead with eggs or egg imitations, downstream of chinook salmon spawning beds.

The majority of spawning is done, but steelhead are still picking off stray eggs. Avoid walking on salmon beds.

The current rain may bring the river up but doesn't look big enough to blow the river out, Whitaker predicted.

That means opportunities throughout the river.

Whitaker reported catching a few coho salmon by twitching jigs.

All chinook salmon angling is closed above Hog Creek, and even below that the chinook show is pretty much done, with many of the fish already dead after spawning.

On the Upper Rogue, steelhead fishing re-opened to bait and lures upstream of Shady Cove this week, but below the Shady Cove ramp no bait fishing is allowed.

All steelhead and coho fishing is fin-clipped only currently.

• APPLEGATE RIVER. Open to hatchery trout angling, but not for steelhead or salmon.

• ILLINOIS RIVER. The first winter steelhead are probably a few weeks away, but sometimes they have been known to show up before Thanksgiving in the Illinois Valley.

Current fishing is primarily catch-and-release for native trout.

• APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. ODFW continues to plant trout, including 1,000 12- to 14-inch fish this week.

Pressure is low. Trolling should be productive.

The only place to launch is French Gulch.

• LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. ODFW has stocked more than 8,000 trout here in the last month, including 2,300 15-inch "trophy" trout, and 5,000 legals.

• SELMAC. Bass fishing can be sunrisingly good before the fish shut down for winter in cold weather.

Look for largemouth chasing baitfish and cast spinnerbaits or crankbaits around structure. The trout angling should improve with the cooler weather.

• GALESVILLE. Fishing should be good for bass and trout.

• OTHER LAKES. Diamond, Hyatt, Lake of the Woods, Fish and Willow have all had trout stocked recently.

• COAST. The Chetco River has been producing some catches of chinook salmon after last week's rain, both in the river and in the bay.

The Smith, Elk, Sixes and Winchuck rivers should also be seeing chinook salmon coming soon.
