Flies best bet for trout fishing on the Rogue above Shady Cove (Fishing report)

Salmonflies have begun to hatch on the Rogue River above Shady Cove.

The insects live in water for the first portion of their lives and often boost the trout bite during that time.

Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle recommends using imitation salmonflies or beaded nymphs to fish for trout at Shady Cove.

"There's some summer steelhead up there, too," Whitaker said. "You can back-troll plugs up there as well. But flies are going to be the best bet. The salmonfly hatch up there should keep going on for a bit longer."

The Holy Water below Lost Creek Dam is the ideal spot for fly fishing with the salmonfly imitations.

The Rogue River is in good shape for a strong week of fishing ahead. The flow has dropped below 4,000 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Grants Pass water treatment facility, and the gage height is below 3.4 feet. The outflows from the Lost Creek Dam are scheduled to flow at 3,000 cfs this month.

The early steelhead run continues to be strong anywhere from Schroeder Park to Robertson Bridge. Whitaker recommends side-drifting small pieces of roe or nightcrawlers to catch steelhead.

Spring chinook are also swimming through and can be had by using sardine-wrapped Kwikfish or back-bouncing roe.

Spinners are the best bet for landing trout on the Rogue. Whitaker said copper-colored Blue Foxes or gold and black Panther Martins should work best.

"There's plenty of fish to be had," he said. "It looks like we're going to be getting some good weather starting on Sunday. The water going down a bit definitely turned on the bite in Shady Cove and should kick it up down here too."

APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. The reservoir is well stocked with legal-size and 1-pound rainbow trout, which should make for very good trout fishing.

Trolling with a Wedding Ring and bait combination has been effective, as has still fishing with bait from the shore. Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good.

Hart-Tish Park and the boat ramp are open. The Copper Boat Ramp is also open.

APPLEGATE RIVER. The river is now open for trout fishing. Two hatchery trout may be harvested per day. Wild trout must be released unharmed.

ILLINOIS RIVER. The Illinois River is now open for trout fishing.

Since only hatchery trout may be retained, and hatchery trout are not likely to be found in the Illinois River at this time of year, fishing will be primarily catch-and-release of the native cutthroat trout.

LAKE SELMAC. Rainbow trout were stocked last week, however angler success was spotty over the weekend. The bluegill bite was very good last week.

Remember that it is easy to cast too far for bass and panfish at Selmac. Many of these fish can be caught (and even seen) fairly close in. Look for these fish around structures along the shore.

LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. The reservoir has been stocked with legal-sized and 1-pound rainbow trout. Fishing has been good for anglers trolling bait and lures.

Bank anglers have been catching fish near the Takelma Ramp, the marina, and the spillway using spinners or a nightcrawler below a bobber.

Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good. The reservoir is full.
