Check Boatnik schedule before heading out to fish (Fishing report)

Fishing on the Rogue River this weekend will be dependent on the Boatnik festivities based out of Riverside Park.

Today through Monday, anglers will want to avoid the areas between Tom Pearce Park and Baker Park, and on Monday at noon all the way to Robertson Bridge.

Fishing downriver of Schroeder Park should be OK on Saturday and Sunday, though the best places for catching spring chinook have been near Shady Cove.

The big action this week has been at area lakes and reservoirs. Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker of U-Save Gas and Tackle has heard rave reviews about Howard Prairie Lake and Hyatt Lake in particular.

"Both have been really good to anglers," Whitaker said. "They're catching fish up there with chunks of nightcrawlers or Berkley Power Maggots while trolling a Wedding ring. PowerBait is also working really well."

Applegate Reservoir and Lost Creek Reservoir each received large stockings of trout this week. More than 14,000 fish were inserted into Applegate; 11,500 into Lost Creek.

"People fishing at Lost Creek should troll up near the bridge," Whitaker said. "Or go up into the channel above the bridge. At Applegate, put in and the main boat ramp at the marina and troll up and down the big arm over there.

• APPLEGATE RIVER. The Applegate River is now open for trout fishing. Two hatchery trout may be harvested per day. Wild trout must be released unharmed.

• GALESVILLE RESERVOIR. Galesville should start producing largemouth bass and other warm-water fish. It has also been stocked several times in 2017 with legal-size trout and with over 50 trophy-size trout. In addition to trout, the reservoir has been stocked with coho smolts and there have been reports of them being caught in good numbers.

Many people mistakenly think these fish are kokanee. The coho smolts should be adipose fin-clipped. Please remember to release the ones less than 8-inches long.

In the reservoir, all landlocked salmon are considered trout and are part of the five-per-day trout limit, with only one trout over 20-inches long allowed for harvest.

• ILLINOIS RIVER. The Illinois River is now open for trout fishing.

Since only hatchery trout may be retained, and hatchery trout are not likely to be to be found in the Illinois River at this time of year, fishing will be primarily catch-and-release of the native cutthroat trout.

• LAKE SELMAC. Selmac has been stocked with legal-size rainbow trout, and trout fishing has been good. Fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie has also been good. Look for these fish around structures along the shore.

• LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. Lost Creek Reservoir has been stocked this week with 10,000 legal-sized and 1,500 1-pound rainbow trout. Bank anglers have been catching fish near the Takelma Ramp, marina, and spillway using spinners or a nightcrawler below a bobber. Fishing for smallmouth bass should be improving.
