04/7/2017 - Fishing Report
Local hot spot for anglers is Galesville (Fishing report)The location garnering the most recent buzz among local anglers isn't even in Josephine County.Galesville Reservoir, located about 12 miles southeast of Canyonville, has been stocked with legal and trophy-sized trout three times this spring.Add in a load of coho salmon smolts and it's become a popular spot as people continue to wait for the spring chinook run to reach the Grants Pass portion of the Rogue River."It's a place I've heard a lot about," local fishing guide Troy Whitaker said. "I wouldn't mind getting up there. People have been doing really well trolling for (coho) using a Wedding ring tipped with pink and white Berkley PowerBait Nymphs."Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle, says there have been sightings but no verified catches of spring chinook locally.Water conditions are as good as they've been in a while — the discharge rate was below 7,000 cubic feet per second and the gage height below 5 feet as of Thursday night. The potential for stormy weather over the weekend and increased snowmelt could put the good conditions at risk, but a few more days of mild weather could be enough to push more chinook up from the coast."We're praying for not a lot of rain," Whitaker said. "We want the river to keep dropping."In the meantime, winter steelhead are still being caught on the Rogue, especially around Griffin Park.Anglers are back-trolling plugs sized anywhere from K11 to a 3.0.Whitaker recommends using plugs with black and silver or black and gold patterns.Trout fishing continues to be strong at Lost Creek Reservoir following a large stocking last month. It is scheduled to receive another 15,000 trout — 800 of which will be trophy fish — the week of April 17.Lake Selmac (5,000) and Expo Pond (1,500) are scheduled to be stocked next week.• APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. Trout fishing has been fair to good. Anglers have been catching trout up to 16 inches in length.Trout anglers will want to try trolling. A good bet will be a Wedding ring and bait combination. One angler reported a flasher tipped with a worm produced good results during the afternoon. The lake is currently filling and all boat ramps are accessible.• LAKE SELMAC. The lake was stocked with 5,000 legal-sized rainbow trout last week, complementing the 5,000 legal-sized trout stocked a month ago and the larger trout stocked last fall. Trout fishing should be good; however, be advised there are a lot of aquatic weeds.Anglers are already catching some largemouth bass. Fishing for bass and other warm-water species should improve as the weather improves.• REINHART POND. The pond has been stocked with legal-sized rainbow trout. Fishing should continue to be good. Fishing for warm-water species will begin to pick up with the warmer weather.
