5,000 trout stocked at Lake Selmac welcome news for anglers (Fishing report)

The Rogue River may settle down enough to be usable this weekend, but that's not the biggest local news on the fishing front.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocked Lake Selmac with 5,000 legal-sized trout last week, giving anglers an outlet to fish even if conditions don't improve as expected.

"People have been antsy to get out there," local fishing guide Troy Whitaker said. "More people will start hitting the lakes in March and April, but I've heard of a few guys trying it out over there."

Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle, recommends floating nightcrawlers from a bobber or PowerBait to attract the trout.

State regulations impose a limit of five trout per day regardless of the location.

Should the Rogue be accessible in the next week, Whitaker expects winter steelhead to have made their way upriver.

"It won't be ideal conditions, but you might be able to fish near the sides from a drift boat or the bank," Whitaker said.

• APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. The lake is currently much higher than normal for this time of year. All boat ramps should be accessible, but the lake elevation will lower as the Corps of Engineers adjusts back to the rule curve.

• APPLEGATE RIVER. The river is open for trout and steelhead fishing, but the river is currently very high and off color.

Only hatchery steelhead may be retained and anglers must take care in releasing wild fish.

Steelhead fishing could be good once outflow out of the dam decreases and the river clears. That may not happen until early next week.

Wild trout must be released unharmed.

• ILLINOIS RIVER. Wild steelhead over 2 feet long may be harvested on the Illinois between Klondike Creek and Pomeroy Dam (located near Cave Junction); limits of one per day and five per year.

Fishing is restricted to artificial flies and lures. The Illinois River is open for trout fishing, but is high and muddy. Expect the river to clear up by the weekend.

• REINHART POND. Reinhardt was stocked with 300 legal-sized fish last week and 500 "pounder" rainbow trout late last fall. Fishing should continue to be good.
