Fishing options limited with wet weather (Fishing report)

This winter, the weather has followed a pattern: rain ahead of the weekend, limiting fishing on the river.

Then, the weather clears up enough to give hope to anglers before dumping another dose of water to blow out the rivers.

This pattern held true to form this week, as the middle Rogue River rose to more than 10 feet again on Thursday. The Illinois River broke 20 feet and the Applegate pushed above 10 feet.

In response, fishing guide Troy Whitaker said an angler's best bet is to try lake fishing.

"You may want to try Lake Selmac, Applegate or Lost Creek and troll around if you need to get some fishing in," said Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle.

All three offer trout fishing options.

On Lost Creek Reservoir, Whitaker said trolling a Flashlight with a Wedding Ring tipped with a night crawler at 50-80 feet might be the best bet.

As for the rivers, they have had winter steelhead pushing through the system. Whitaker said two dozen hatchery steelhead were collected Wednesday at the Cole Rivers Hatchery.

"We're stir-crazy right now," Whitaker said. "It's just a matter of time. As soon as the river comes into shape, it's going to be hot-and-heavy fishing."

The best options will be fishing a side planer with a plug.

"If we can get (the Rogue) to come down a few feet, you can do it," he said. "It's just a matter of when and how much it goes down. We're starting to deal with warmer days and getting snowmelt. Plus, it flat poured (Thursday)."
