Fishing slows with cold, icy conditions (Fishing report)

The Rogue River won't freeze over this week, but ongoing winter weather has and will continue to impact fishing conditions.

Water temperatures below 40 degrees have left fish a little sluggish on the bite. Local fishing guide Troy Whitaker said not to worry — they'll perk right up once they're on a hook.

"It's very cold being out there, but there are fish being caught," Whitaker said. "The guys down at Rand (Park) are definitely catching with their side-planers and their favorite plugs."

A few specific color combinations on plugs seem to be working better than others there and elsewhere on the Rogue.

Pink and silver, black and silver, and pink with a black back have all been working well.

Whitaker, of U-Save Gas and Tackle, also recommends side-drifting dime-sized pieces of roe with a pink or orange puff ball.

The best stretches to fish from a boat include ones from Valley of the Rogue State Park down to Rogue River, from Rogue River to Grants Pass, and from Baker Park to Robertson Bridge.

Rain forecasted for the weekend will likely wash the river out by Sunday, Whitaker said, but fishing before that should be more than manageable.

• APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. Trout fishing has been fair to good. Trout anglers will want to try trolling. A good bet will be a Wedding Ring and bait combination.

One angler reported a flasher tipped with a worm produced good results during afternoon hours. Fishing with bait from shore in the upper reservoir should also produce results.

French Gulch is the only boat ramp that is currently useable.

• APPLEGATE RIVER. The river is open for trout and steelhead angling but remains closed to chinook fishing.

Only hatchery steelhead may be retained. Steelhead fishing on the Applegate is usually slow in January, however, with the high flows recently, fishing could be good.

Wild trout must be released unharmed.

• ILLINOIS RIVER. Wild steelhead longer than 2 feet may be harvested on the Illinois between Klondike Creek and Pomeroy Dam; one per day and five per year. Look for fishing to be good early in January on the Illinois.

Fishing is restricted to artificial flies and lures. The Illinois River is open for trout fishing.

• LAKE SELMAC. Trout fishing should improve with decreasing water temperatures. However, there are a lot of aquatic weeds.

The lake was stocked with 600 pounders this fall and fishing should be good.

• LOST CREEK RESERVOIR. Trout fishing is still good at Lost Creek. The reservoir was recently stocked with legal and trophy-sized fish.

Recent reports have been encouraging. One angler caught seven trout in about six hours fishing a green Wedding Ring and a worm behind an oval egg sinker and dodger.

Surface water temperatures have dropped to 43 degrees. Bank anglers are catching fish near the Takelma ramp and near the marina using PowerBait or threading a nightcrawler below a bobber.
