Dollar Mountain (1,862 feet) |
A couple of large granite outcrops can be found near the trail to the top of Dollar Mountain, which offers the easiest birds-eye view of town for those on foot. The mountain that used to be crowned with a group of tall fir trees now seems punier with the cell tower that went up around 2000.
Dollar Mountain has nothing to do with money, despite the name. “There was an old ranch up there, and they used to raise strawberries,” said the late author Edna May Hill in a 1992 Daily Courier article. “They were as big as dollars, I believe that’s what it was.” Or, more likely, it was from the Dollar family ranch off of the end of B Street, said Michael Oaks, local historian. |
B Street Trail Rating (Out of 5): 3.5 Location: Grants Pass Distance: 2 miles round-trip Open for hiking: Year-round Difficulty: moderate/difficult Camping: No Quick hit: This sometimes steep trail climbs to the top of Dollar Mountain’s 1,862-foot summit through an oak woodland, with views that highlight the town of Grants Pass and the Rogue Valley. The trail becomes steep as it climbs higher and at one point splits in two. The trail going right is the easiest to follow up switchbacks. After the switchbacks, the trail levels out and heads up to the summit. Directions: Follow B Street all the way from downtown Grants Pass as it heads into the hills. When you arrive at Crescent Street, turn left and head about .2 miles to the trailhead. Click here for more hikes in the area |
