Divers were called in Friday to recover a body from the Rogue River in Grants Pass near Baker Park.

Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel said the body was discovered between the park and the Seventh Street Bridge by two fishermen traveling on the river.

He said the body was visible from the surface of the water, likely because of a combination of the river levels being low and the water being relatively warm, approximately 65 degrees.

As of around 2:45 p.m. Friday, law enforcement on scene at Baker Park were waiting for a dive team from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office to arrive to recover the body.

Daniel said that the body had not yet been identified and the gender of the person had not been determined, but deputies believed the body is connected to reports of a suspected drowning in the wee hours of Monday morning.

A drowning was reported to 911 at 3:50 a.m. Monday, according to notes provided by emergency dispatch.

At the time, the Grants Pass fire department said they were unable to locate anybody and referred further inquiries to law enforcement.

Daniel said the report was of a person yelling and throwing things off the Seventh Street Bridge. He said the callers believed the person had gone into the water upstream from the bridge.

A search of the area at the time did not prove fruitful, he said.
